Rachel’s Garden: Pleasant Valley Book Two

by Romance Lady on July 30, 2010

Product DescriptionIt has been almost a year since the Amish community of Pleasant Valley lost Ezra Brand to a tragic accident. Since then, his wife, Rachel, has struggled to raise their three children and run their dairy farm…Rachel’s friends and family have come forward to help — Rachel’s friend Leah, who is now married and expecting a child; Ezra’s brothers, who work on the farm; and Rachel’s parents, who are no strangers to grief after their only son, Johnny, left the Amish community. But their constant advice, however well-intentioned, puts undue pressure on Rachel. And when Gideon Zook — Ezra’s best friend, who survived the accident — asks her permission to build the greenhouse that Ezra had always promised her, she finds his presence too painful a reminder of the past. As spring turns to summer, and Rachel puts her heart into growing the flowers and plants that have always brought her joy, can she discover the courage to make her own choices…and embrace new beginnings?

What a refreshing look at Amish Life! Marta Perry takes us into a world that she obviously loves and respects in her second “Pleasant Valley” novel.

In Rachel’s Garden we learn to know Rachel, who was introduced to us in the first book of this series, Leah’s Choice. In the time between the two books, Rachel’s husband has been killed in a tragic accident, and the Amish community in Pleasant Valley comes to her support. Even with the help of her family and church, Rachel’s winter has been long and dark, but with spring comes a glimmer of hope and the comfort of her beloved plants and garden.

But will Rachel be able to support herself and her three children? Will she be forced to sell the dairy farm that was Ezra’s dream for his children? And in the midst of her struggles, her husband’s best friend Gideon insists on building a greenhouse for her – Ezra’s last gift to her, planned long before his death. Will Rachel ever be able to forgive Gideon for surviving the accident that claimed her husband’s life?

This is a sweet story of forgiveness and love in the aftermath of a great loss. Don’t miss this series!

Rachel Brand is struggling to survive after the tragic death of her husband, Ezra. Now, Rachel and her three children are forced to make decisions they don’t want to make. Should they sell Ezra’s farm and move home with Rachel’s parents? Or should she try to keep Ezra’s dreams alive?

Rachel’s friends and family come forward to help. Ezra’s brothers are maintaining his milk cow herd, and Ezra’s best friend, Gideon Zook asks Rachel’s permission to build the greenhouse that Ezra promised Rachel. But Gideon was involved in the same accident that claimed Ezra’s life, and his presence is a reminder of all Rachel has lost.

But without the income from the plants Rachel sells to the community, she may be forced to sell the farm and have no means of supporting her family. Or, would it be wiser to take her greenhouse and let Ezra’s brother buy the farm? Can Rachel find the courage to make her own choices?

RACHEL’S GARDEN is the second book in Ms. Perry’s Pleasant Valley series, but it easily stands alone. Readers might find it helpful though to understand a bit about Rachel’s brother, Johnny, and her friend, Leah, both of whom are in the first book.

I enjoyed getting to know a bit more about the characters featured in the first book, Leah’s Choice, and especially getting to know Rachel, Gideon, and Ezra’s sweetheart younger brother, William. I hope that sometime in the future, Ms. Perry will have William as a hero in a book.

A glossary of Amish terms, a preview of Ms. Perry’s third book in the series Anna’s Return, coming in June 2010 are included at the end of the book. Don’t miss RACHEL’S GARDEN if you are looking for a good Amish book to read.

I finished the first in the series, Leah’s Choice, and immediately started on Rachel’s Garden and finished it in two days. They are beautiful stories that give you alot to think about. I can hardly wait until June 2010 to start the third book, Anna’s Return. If it is half as good as the previous two then I will be happy.
